Community Treatment Orders (CTO)

Community Treatment Orders (CTO) is a provincial strategy to provide individuals with serious mental illness a comprehensive plan of community based treatment or care and supervision, that is less restrictive than being detained in a psychiatric facility.

A CTO is intended for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness who experience recurrent hospitalizations, and who demonstrate benefit from treatment, but are not compliant with out-patient follow-up.

A Community Treatment Order can help ensure that persons with mental illness receive the care and treatment that they require.

The CTO Case Manager in the Cochrane Timiskaming Branch provides the following services:

• Outreach function including identification, engagement, crisis intervention, intensive short term support and linkages to appropriate services
• Comprehensive individualized assessment and planning
• Direct service provision
• Coordination and support
• Monitoring and evaluation
• Systematic advocacy and coordination
• Family education and support (including Substitute Decision Maker)
• Training and education

All support services are tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual and clearly reflect the clients' Community Treatment Plan as outline in the Order. Services are available for the duration of the Community Treatment Order (6 months) and will be extended upon renewal.

The Community Treatment Order Program accepts referrals initiated by the family doctor, psychiatrist, community agencies, family members, and self-referrals. For further information, please contact one of our Branch offices and ask to speak with the CTO Case Manager.
